Luna Dance Institute

Luna Dance Institute is a nationally-acclaimed dance education organization based in Berkeley, CA. Established in 1992, our mission aims to bring creativity, equity and community to every child’s life through the art of dance. Luna uses active inquiry to deepen the learning experience of children and adults, improve teaching practice and build high quality arts programs. As we bring all children to dance, we develop future leaders, choreographers and visionaries.

Luna’s Professional Learning Component and our Model Programs work in tandem to explore the confluence of neuroscience (brain), literacy (communication), creativity (play) and relationships (community)–all connected through the moving body. Our efforts to build cultures of dance have taken root in communities throughout California.

Model Programs

Luna’s model programs: School and Community Alliances, MPACT (Moving Parents and Children Together) and Studio Lab reveal what is possible in dance education and provide field research opportunities. Through them, we serve children and families in our local communities, representing the diversity of the Bay Area, as they learn to use the art of choreography to express their own ideas, feelings and visions for a brighter future.

Professional Learning

Professional Learning (PL) at Luna is the pedagogy engine that drives our programs and provides specialized education for dance teaching artists, classroom teachers, school and arts leaders, early childhood faculty, social workers and therapists. After study with us, incorporating data collected from our model program inquiries, they take their new knowledge, skills and inspiration back to their home communities —exponentially expanding Luna’s reach.
